SPONSOR: Is Your Antivirus Not Effective In Detecting Spyware?
|
 |
If you have found your AV vendor to be less than effective at
detecting and quarantining spyware, you are not the only one. The
leading AV companies now claim they catch spyware but in reality,
their results are not even close to the dedicated stand-alone tools.
You cannot afford to have a false sense of security when your
organization's security and compliance is at stake! eWEEK said this
about Symantec: "Unfortunately, deficiencies with the anti-spyware
cleaning and blocking routines make it difficult to recommend this
solution for companies battling the spyware scourge." 30-day eval
CounterSpy with the best antispyware database in the industry:

Killer PC Viruses Are Unlikely
Robert Mitchell in ComputerWorld 'opined' that virus writers could
destroy your computer by altering its microcode, and some experts
think such viruses are inevitable. I tend to disagree. Virus writers
have gone commercial and now write spyware for good money. Totally
trashing the machine they have infected is not in anyone's benefit.
More over, the level of uniformity in hardware is not high enough
for these types of killer viruses to get very far.
This Week Is Win95's 10-Year Anniversary
In terms of real numbers, W95 has shrunk to just over one percent of
the total Windows clients. It has dropped dramatically over the past
few years. But that still means millions of PC's. Just check out
the Windows forums, the W95 users are still out there! Most of these
are happy with the performance as is, and do not want anything new.
That is Redmond's biggest problem in convincing these people to up-
grade to Vista, which according to Microsoft execs is like Win95, in
terms of importance for both customers, Microsoft and the Redmond
partner "ecosystem".
The Best Ammo Yet!
The Wall Street Journal just wrote that Tech Spending is rising
specifically for security tools. Analysts state that tech spending
is going to be up 7% over last year, compared to 3% last year.
Forrester, IDC and Yankee all see significant growth. If you want
your managers to check this out at the WSJ.com site, tell them to
search on this: "Tech Spending Is on Track to Rise". And then
ask them for budget approval! [grin]
Quote Of The Week:
"The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the
world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-
a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we
cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated." -- Ronald Reagan
"The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has
to make sense. -- Tom Clancy.

Stu

Student In Holland Finds Original Einstein Manuscript
A Dutch student has found an important original manuscript from
Albert Einstein in the Lorentz Institute for Theoretical Physics
of the University of Leiden. A spokesperson of the University
has acknowledged the rare find. According to specialists it is
an important article from 1924 where Einstein writes about his
latest discovery.
He describes what in the meantime has been named the so-called
Bose-Einstein condensation. It is the phenomenon where the atoms
of a gas experience a phase transition at extreme low temperatures.
The confirmation of this theory by a physics experiment was only
actually recently confirmed (1995), 40 years after Einstein's
death.
The student was doing research for an essay in the home archive
of Mr. P.Ehrenfest, who was a Professor of Theoretical Physics
at the Leiden University from 1912 to 1933. He was a good friend
of Einstein. The article has 16 pages, and Einstein was a guest
professor in at the Leiden University. The find is being called
fantastic, it is clearly recognizable as Einstein's copper script
handwriting. Here it is!

NEC PC With Water-cooling
A lot of hobbyists have created water-cooled PC's but not many
of the large hardware vendors have gone there. Up to now. NEC's
Valuestar G Type C is one. According to NEX you can keep a machine
with an Intel Celeron at a max of 30 decibel and that is truly
extremely quiet. It's NEC's first consumer water-cooled PC. You can
only order it online for the moment. THAT is going to cause a few
problems I'm afraid. Look for yourself:

Troubleshoot Disk Quotas In Windows 2003
Disk quotas are one of the most useful storage management features
that W2K3 offers. The quotas let administrators control the growth
of storage requirements and encourage users to employ storage
resources efficiently. However, because they directly affect users,
storage quotas can produce a lot of interaction -- and friction --
with users. For that reason, it is important that you diagnose and
fix problems or unusual conditions that arise with disk quotas --
quickly. Good article on the SearchWinSystems site:

Head Of Data Security Steals Quarter Million Of Own Bank
The head of data security at the Helsinki branch of GE Money is
charged with stealing roughly $244K from his own bank, using a
company laptop while squatting on a neighbor's unsecured wireless
network. Here is the story in a Finnish online newspaper:

Don't Let Laptops Infect Your Network
Do you know where users take corporate laptops when they leave
the office? More importantly, do you know what they are bringing
back into the office? SearchWindowsSecurity editor Ben Vigil
opines on personal firewall options in the wake of Zotob and
other recent threats:

Microsoft Extends SUS Support!
This must come as a sigh of relief for a lot of system admins.
Redmond decided this week to give a six-month reprieve to all
SUS users (Software Update Services). They announced that they
will support SUS until Dec. 6, 2006, instead of the original
drop dead date of June 6, 2006. More and more it seems, Redmond
listens to customers, (and W2Knews that voices complaints ;-) )
People bellyached about having to upgrade to Windows Server
Update Services, which is the next major new version to SUS
because of timing issues. And Redmond listened. They still want
users to deploy WSUS though, and has published an upgrade
guide from SUS to WSUS here:
http://www.w2knews.com/050829RN-Upgrade_Guide
And updated their Knowledge Base here:
